Town hall meeting addresses variety of topics

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX -- Our student population is outgrowing our schools, synthetic drugs are still sold in our community, and residents can find free housing and legal assistance through the city.

A town hall meeting Wednesday (Mar. 27th) at Travis Middle School in Amarillo addressed all those issues and more in the name of public information.  Residents learned not only what our community has to offer, but what they can offer the community.

The meeting brought city officials, school board members, and nonprofit organizations together to let residents know some of the most pressing issues facing our city.  Potter County Commissioner Alphonso Vaughn outlined the meeting's agenda and intent, saying, "We have issues that are ongoing, such as the bond election from AISD, we've got issues such as housing that they need to be aware of that the city is involved in, and also we've got some illicit activities that are going on in our community involving our youth as far as drugs, and we want to share with the public some of these things that are happening that they need to be aware of."

Amarillo Independent School District appealed for public support for a bond that would expand our schools.  AISD is asking for $99.4 million in bonds to build two new junior high schools and upgrade security at our local elementary schools.

Doing so would raise the average homeowner's tax rate by about $18.32 a year.  That bond election will be held May 11th.

Residents also learned how they can find free housing and legal assistance through the city.  To learn more about all of these issues, follow the links attached to this story.
