In a bittersweet reminder of what raising cattle is all about, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo's Grand Champion Junior Market Steer sold at auction Saturday for $360,000.
About $75,000 of that will go to Kelton Long, the Wellington teenager who raised the prize winning Charolais named Chappie.
The rest of the money goes toward the rodeo's annual "Educational Commitment," which this year is about $24.7 million.
That commitment includes more than $12 million in scholarships and nearly $6 million in payments to junior show exhibitors.
