Crime Stoppers local success

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - Because of local residents, Amarillo Police Department solved nearly 300 cases last year.

In 2012, over 150 arrests were made, based on over 1600 tips from area residents.

Governor Perry has declared January Crime Stoppers month, hoping to bring awareness to the program, and for good reason.

Corporal Sean Slover says over the past couple of years Amarillo produced record breaking numbers through Crime Stoppers.

He says this is due to cooperation with tipsters, local help from the media, and hard work from law enforcement.

Cpl. Sean Slover says, "our little program, since our inception we've recovered a little over 2.4 million dollars in recovered property, seized narcotics, and things like that. It's a huge thing. All these things factor into the success of our program. But more importantly they factor in to the safety and security of our community."

Last year alone, Crime Stoppers helped bring 30 of the Texas Department of Public Safety's most wanted fugitives to justice

And a record 93,000 dollars was paid out in cash rewards.
