ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico is among states where Republican legislators want to ban enforcement of federal gun laws.
Legislation introduced by Republican Rep. Nora Espinoza of Roswell would make it a felony for a government official or firearms dealer to enforce federal gun laws in New Mexico.
Other states where Republican legislators have introduced similar legislation include Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming.
The laws are a backlash to gun-control measures either being proposed or approved by President Barack Obama and others in the wake of the December school shooting in Connecticut.
Espinoza's bill in New Mexico also would call on the state attorney general to defend New Mexico residents accused of violating federal fun laws.
The Albuquerque Journal reports that 10 other representatives are co-sponsoring Espinoza's bill.
