Amarillo man stabbed and killed after assaulting ex-girlfriend

Posted: Updated:

An Amarillo man is dead after he attempted to assault his ex-girlfriend but was then struck in the chest with a sharp weapon. Police say it happened early Sunday morning at 600 S. Bolton Apt. C.

According to the female caller, her ex-boyfriend, later identified as 37-year-old Christopher Wayne Mooney, entered the residence without her permission and began assaulting her.

That's when the females current boyfriend, also a resident at the apartment, heard the commotion and stepped in between the female and Mooney. The current boyfriend claims Mooney approached him with his hand up and that's when he struck him in the chest with a weapon. The suspect sustained a severe injury to his upper body and staggered outside where he collapsed in the driveway. Officials found the man dead on the scene when they arrived. Both the female and male occupants were questioned and released pending further investigation.

An autopsy has been ordered and APD Special Crimes in continuing to investigate. Police are asking anyone with information on this case to call Special Crimes at 378-9468.
