APD officer fires weapon at van after driver attempts to hit him

Original Press Release from Amarillo Police Department:

"On 1-12-13, at about 2:00 PM, officers stopped a black Chevrolet HHR on the west side of the motel at 1911 E. IH-40. The male driver was in custody as part of a criminal investigation and had been handcuffed and placed in a patrol car. A female later identified as the suspect's girlfriend located a white van that had been left running on the east side of the same motel. She stole the van, drove around the motel, and struck the rear of the patrol car. She then backed up, went around the patrol car, and drove forward, striking the detained suspect's Chevrolet, knocking it completely out of the position in front of the patrol car. The woman drove forward again, striking a large natural gas pipe before driving onto Ross Street. There, she turned completely around, and drove back toward the entry driveway of the motel where the officers had made the stop. The female in the van ran into the right front of a white Dodge pickup that was in the motel parking lot's driveway leading out onto Ross Street. She revved the motor of the van to continue forward. An officer involved in the arrest was standing on the right side of the pickup, in the path of the suspect vehicle. The officer believed the woman was trying to drive around the truck and through the driveway and run over him. He fired his duty pistol three times at the suspect to stop her. Shots struck the van but did not strike the woman. She ducked down and stopped trying to drive forward. Officers approached the van, broke out the driver's side window, and took the woman into custody. The woman sustained minor cuts from flying glass but was not hit by the officer's shots. She refused medical treatment. No one else was injured. The Special Crimes Unit is still investigating and no names have been released."
