Palo Duro Canyon State Park dedicates new hiking trail

Posted: Updated:

It may have been the first day of December, but it was still a perfect day for a hiking trip in Palo Duro Canyon. Saturday, several hikers and bikers had the chance to explore a new trail in the canyon.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department along with the Palo Duro Canyon State Park hosted a dedication today for the newly constructed and opened Rock Garden Hike and Bike Trail in the canyon. The new 2.38 mile trail is open to hikers and bikers and includes new pathways to existing remote trail systems in the 30,000 acre state park.

"It's incredible, you can see from one end of the park to the other when you get up on top and you're looking right down into the camping areas of the park," said Cory Evans with the Palo Duro Canyon State Park. "So yeah it's a place that nobody's been to on a rim yet so as a recent purchase for the park and I think folks will be really surprised when they get to the top."

A few select guests had the chance to try out the new trail after the ribbon cutting today. One avid hiker said the 600 foot climb in elevation is a challenge, but one he says is worth it.

"Yeah I think it'll be pretty popular," said hiker Adam Pavlak. "It's something new for people to go up on and it's pretty difficult so it'll be a challenge for a lot of people. You can see the canyon and all the way over to the other side of the rims so it's really neat up at the top."

The Rock Garden Trail begins at park road five near the Sunflower day use area.
