Small Business Saturday encourages more local holiday shopping

After plenty of preparation and surviving Black Friday, a few local businesses in Canyon were all ready for Small Business Saturday. That promotional idea began back in 2010 when American Express started encouraging people to "shop locally" the Saturday following Thanksgiving. A concept store owners believe is great for a few reasons.

"For one, small businesses usually shop local themselves so the money is staying in your town," said Mardee Matlack, owner of Reuze Thrift Store in Canyon.

"It is crucial, I mean we're supporting local artists," added Tarra Teel, store associate for the Silver Turtle also in Canyon. "A lot of out furniture is refinished by the local people so that, you're just directly stimulating the economy."

Plus, the atmosphere of smaller businesses isn't quite what you're used to seeing the weekend following Thanksgiving, such as the mobs of people fighting over the newest technology and discounted items.

"It is nice to go the big city and to have the hype, to have the discounts but sometimes people like to take their time and shop," said Matlack. "Canyon has ample parking and people can just meander in and out of the shops."

Reuze is only one of 19 locally owned businesses on the Canyon square. There, owners said they saw about a 60 percent increase in profits on Friday and expect to see even more Saturday.

"Twice as many people walking through the store, than normal," explained Matlack.

"I've been blown away each day and every weekend with the amount of traffic we have," added Teel. "So we're expecting a good turnout."

Proof people of the Panhandle like to shop big, while supporting the small.
