WTAMU hosts suicide survivors event to help encourage support

Posted: Updated:

Across the nation and the globe, Saturday was a day to remember and honor the lives of those that have been lost to suicide.  Saturday was International Survivors of Suicide Day.

Saturday morning, West Texas A&M hosted an event to help encourage and support those who have experienced the death of someone by suicide.  Those attending heard from several speakers who are suicide survivors themselves as well as from local grief professionals, because organizers say the effects of suicide are more far-reaching than many people realize.

"It's really important for people to know they are not alone, and that suicide impacts more than just the immediate family," said Melody Loya with WTAMU. "There are a lot of people affected, not just the person who has decided to end their life. the ones that are left behind those are the ones we want to reach out to. As well as prevent future suicides."

Saturday's event was sponsored by the Texas Suicide Prevention Coalition. Organizers encouraged any other survivors of suicide, or those struggling with grief, to call the national help hotline at 1-800-273-TALK.
