UPDATE: Train Crashes into Veterans Parade Float

Posted: Updated:

Authorities say at least four people are dead and 17 others were injured when a parade procession of wounded warriors was hit by a train in Midland, Texas.

A Union Pacific spokesman says the eastbound train was sounding its horn before it hit a float carrying veterans who were wounded in action, as well as their spouses.

Witnesses say people tried to jump from the float as the freight train sounded its horn before barreling through.

17 people were transported to a local hospital, 10 have now been treated and released. Four others are stable and one remains in critical condition.

The parade was set to end at a "Hunt for Heroes'' banquet.

Federal investigators say the freight train that slammed into a parade float packed with wounded veterans and their wives was equipped with a forward-facing camera.

The National Transportation Safety Board will examine that footage to help determine what caused the crash on the tracks in Midland, Texas.
