Adoption need still great in Panhandle

Posted: Updated:

There are more than 300 children in the panhandle area in need of homes.

November is national adoption month and there are several ways you can get involved. This evening in Amarillo, the Department of Family and Protective Services is holding a meeting for prospective foster and adoption families.

Thursday Protective Services will celebrate Adoption Day in Canyon at the Randall County courthouse where 18 children will be adopted.

Adoption supervisor Micah Smith says minority and older children tend to stay in state care the longest, but they're trying to change that. And adds there is always a need for adoptive families in our area.

"You know with the number we adopt out, we have that same number pretty much coming back in. It kind of stays pretty even as far as getting kids taken off of foster care and put into adoptive homes, then we have more coming in. So it is kind of an even flow back and forth," Smith says.

She says the misconceptions of older adoptive children aren't true. These children just need a stable and consistent home.

If you are interested in adoption meetings and events will be held throughout the Panhandle.
