Hundreds gather at Amarillo VA to honor area veterans

Posted: Updated:

As veterans day approaches, groups across Amarillo were already getting together to celebrate and honor our veterans. Things kicked off Saturday morning with Veterans Day Parade in downtown Amarillo followed by the Amarillo VA's 6th Annual Welcome Home Celebration.

Hundreds gathered to enjoy the live entertainment, free cookout, as well as games and door prizes. But most of all, to honor area veterans and their families, including military personnel who may have served in more recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"We have a very patriotic, very supportive Amarillo community and Panhandle, and it makes events like this, easy," said the VA's Community and Patient Relations Coordinator Barbara Moore. "I think every little bit makes the veterans appreciate it."

Medical professionals were also on hand to provide free flu shots to veterans.

Veterans looking for more information on the Amarillo VA and the services they provide, call their office at 356-3737.
