New Guymon emergency youth shelter

Posted: Updated:

Guymon, Oklahoma - A new addition to an area community will help some children have a better childhood.

About four years ago a community needs survey went out around the Guymon area, and a main request was for an emergency youth shelter.

The nearest place for child victims of abuse, neglect, and mistreatment was nearly three hours away.

The shelter director says she receives phone calls every day from child welfare looking for safe places for children to stay.

Her ultimate goal is to eventually reunite the children with their parents or guardians, but until then it's nice to be able to keep the youngsters in familiar territory.

Darci Freeland says, "by having a shelter home here and by having host homes here, the children are able to remain in their community, their able to attend their schools that they're familiar with and maintain some sort of normality in their life when they're in a crisis situation."

She tells me without the community, this shelter would not be possible.
