After months of campaigning, President Barack Obama has been re-elected for a second term.
The big talk right now is that Obama took to Twitter to proclaim himself the winner over Republican candidate Mitt Romney.
Obama tweeted, "This happened because of you. Thank you."
This message was posted even before the President took the stage in Chicago.
Minutes later when the race was called in his favor, Obama tweeted again.
At that point there were 327,000 tweets a minute.
This shows the tremendous role social media platforms played in the 2012 elections.
By 10 PM Tuesday night Eastern Time, there were more than 31 million election-related tweets.
This makes election night the most tweeted about event in U.S. political history.
Experts say Twitter brought people closer to almost every aspect of the election this year; from breaking news, to sharing the experience of watching the debates, to interacting directly with the candidates.
