Sunrise balloon ascension wraps up Pirates of the Canyon

Posted: Updated:

Several hundred people filled Palo Duro Canyon early Sunday morning for a hot air balloon ascension.

Balloons lifted off around 7:45 Sunday morning as the last "hoorah" in this year's Pirates of the Canyon Hot Air Balloon rally. According to one balloonist, the lack of wind Sunday morning made it the perfect time for a balloon ride.

"This is the 7th annual Pirates of the Canyon and this is the best weather we've had in seven years," said one of the event's balloonists. "We had a great flight this morning, the winds could not have cooperated any better. We're glad that everybody got to come out and view the balloons."

A few folks even got to take a ride in one of the balloons and one avid hot air balloon fan said it was experience everyone should have. Don't worry, even if you missed it, you've got another chance next year.

"To come out here this morning and see 17 of them take off at one time. I mean, it's something that everybody should experience.," said Larry Scheller. "If you missed it this year, we invite you to come back next year. It's something you'll never forget."

It was a beautiful sight with an even more beautiful mission. Proceeds from this year's hot air balloon rally will to toward benefiting the High Plains Food Bank.
