New fire station coming to southwest Amarillo

Amarillo, TX -- A new fire station will be built in southwest Amarillo to accommodate expected growth in the area.

Earlier today (Oct. 23), city commissioners unanimously approved a contract to begin construction on Fire Station 13, to be located at 6383 45th, on the north side of John Stiff Park.

Location is key in fire station placement, and Station 13 will be strategically located to more effectively cover the area, as Amarillo Fire Department Captain Jacob Oehlert explains,

"By locating 13 at the park where they've put it, it's going to give a double-coverage for that area.

City Commissioner Jim Simms says an added benefit of strategic planning is lower insurance rates for all residents, saying,

"This has made Amarillo a much safer place to live, because the fire stations are geographically better placed; it also has lowered our citizens' insurance rates because of how we have expanded and improved our fire department."

The roughly $2 million facility will be paid for with 2007 certificates of obligation, which commissioners say is a prudent use of resources.

The station is expected to be completed within a year.
