Copper thieves have new target

Posted: Updated:

Copper thieves now have a new target.

You can't miss the many broadcast towers north of town while driving on the Loop or US-87. Copper thieves haven't either.

Three radio and television towers have been broken into within in past two weeks. The Potter County Sheriff's Department says metals, A/C units, and other items are likely being turned in for scrap metal. The suspects are causing major damage to the tower sites. The Sheriff's Department says they are doing all they can to prevent more of these crimes.

"Well, like I said, we've increased our patrols. We're actually doing, well we've increased our beat checks and notified the other agencies that may have towers in their counties or cities," Cpt. Roger Haney with Potter County Sheriff's Office says.

And it's not just other law enforcement they have notified. Local and surrounding area scrap yards have been made aware on what to look for.

One business told us as part of Texas state law they take pictures of everything that is sold to them.
