Tyson Foods verifies animal treatment

Tyson Foods says they're making sure animals are being treated properly at their suppliers' farms.

Audits have already begun on some of the 3,000 independent hog farms that supply the company. The Farm Check Program will eventually audit chicken and cattle farms as well. The program checks on the animal's access to food and water, proper human interaction, and worker training.

We received a statement from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or PETA Tuesday which says Tyson needs to stop cruelty practices like placing mother pigs in tight crates. They claim auditing will not fix these problems.

Tyson says they're willing to fix any issues. President & CEO Donnie Smith says, "We know that the farmers who supply us are the best in the world. And I think these audits are going to verify that. But if we do find problems, then we want to work with the farmer to fix those problems right away."

Currently, Tyson personnel are conducting the exams, but the company plans to also add independent auditors as they expand the program in a little over a year.
