WT's upward bound program receives grant

Posted: Updated:

Canyon, Texas - More High School students can be prepared for college because A WT college prep program received a grant of over 1.5 million dollars.

The Upward Bound Program provides educational programs to generate the skills and motivation necessary for success in post-secondary education for the first-generation, low income high school students.

The director of the program says the competition for renewal was very tough.

There were fewer grant dollars so many programs weren't renewed.

I asked him what they were planning to do or add to the program with the grant they received.

Dir. Martin Lopez says, "that's really going to go to serve the extra five students. We're going from 75-80 students. Also it will help us survive what probably means no budget increases during that entire five year period. We will get the same funding between now and the time to re-compete."

WT has had the program for nearly 40 years, and Lopez tells me they've had much success with it and are looking forward to being able to have more students take part.
