Friends & family honor fallen Amarillo soldier

Posted: Updated:

Friends and family of a fallen soldier from Amarillo are mourning his death.

Genaro Bedoy was just 20 years old when he was killed this week fighting for our country in Afghanistan.

He was a River Road graduate who administrators say was very involved in school, always had a smile on his face, and was a good student. Bedoy was a husband and a father to a baby girl.

The US Department of Defense is investigating the attack of four soldiers, which included Bedoy. Whether it was a man dressed up as an Afghan soldier, or if it was an insider attack.

River Road ISD is helping them by taking donations at each of their schools.

Bedoy was a best friend to Garrett Dorman. Dorman says, "I'm very thankful that I had him as one of my friends. And I'll always cherish that for the rest of my life. I'll never be able to forget him. So you know he'll always be my best friend."

River Road ISD Assistant Superintendent Gaye Lynn Dampf says, "He made the ultimate sacrifice for this country. He served our country with honor and with pride. And it's young people like that, that we're all so very proud of."

Bedoy was honored at Friday night's River Road Homecoming Game. Family and friends released red, white, and blue balloons at the stadium in memory of Bedoy.

The school district will be collecting donations for the family at each of their schools. Amarillo National Bank also set up a savings account for them.
