High school ref from West Texas called up to NFL

AMARILLO, Texas (AP) - Before he refereed two high school games in West Texas last weekend, Amarillo businessman Wayne Bernier was working an NFL game between the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets.

Bernier is a replacement official who was hired by the league while the NFL's regular refs are locked out.

Bernier is 1 of a handful of West Texans who got the call from the NFL. He tells the Amarillo Globe-News that he doesn't see a major difference between refereeing six-man football and the NFL - besides the number of people in the stands.

He's worked a Pittsburgh Steelers game with defensive tackle and Amarillo native Ziggy Hood, who told him, "Welcome to the NFL."

Bernier has been a referee on several competition levels for 19 years.
