CANYON, TX - One of the most popular tourist "hot spots" in town is at the Palo Duro Canyon with one special performance being credited for helping attract thousands of visitors there every summer.
The musical "Texas" is one of the longest running performances in the country.
"It's been a great run for 47 years and we just signed a new contract with the state park to continue on for at least another 25 years," Kris Miller with the Panhandle Heritage Foundation said.
The play depicts the rich history embedded in the panhandle dating back hundreds of years.
"It's always important to go back and recognize where we came from and preserve our history," he said. "This show helps us preserve that history and celebrate that history."
It all takes place inside the canyon at the amphitheater.
The theater can hold up to 1,600 guests.
Performances are going on all summer long every Tuesday through Sunday.
Another main attraction in town is the Canyon's specialized tour program.
"We have three different tours," Kathy Fuller said. "We have an hour tour, a two hour tour and a three hour tour."
Each tour caters to families, tourists and residents who might not have the ability to tour the second largest canyon in the country without assistance."
"It's a nice comfortable ride," Fuller said. "It's not real rough so it's pretty enjoyable even for your handicap people. It's real easy to go out and pick them up in a vehicle."
So whether it's hiking, taking a leisurely tour or catching a late night performance, the canyon is sure to have something for everyone.
