Friona hospital helps the entire community

Friona, TX - The only hospital located in Parmer County is in Friona.

Giving them the ability to help many residents in the area, and even reducing the inconvenience of having to travel for medical care when they get ill.

A twenty five bed hospital serves the Friona area and it is the closest level-four trauma center from here to Amarillo.

The Parmer Medical Center has been in Friona for more than 70 years but after a recent jump up to a level four trauma center they are able to take care of more.

"We provide the major primary care health service for all of the citizens, not only for Friona but for the rest of the county so we have an emergency room, a rural health clinic, we just provide all of those basic needs and we have some specialty clinics, so we have specialists that come in from Amarillo and Lubbock to serve those other special needs that patients may have," Gayla Quillin, the hospital administrator said.

It's not just Friona residents who are helped here, hospital staff say sometimes patients come from across the panhandle.

"People in the community like to tell me what great care they get, how very caring the staff is, how great their doctors are and how they wouldn't want to anywhere else. Some people come from other counties for various reasons, maybe the hospital they were at is too full or something like that and we've had positive comments about them," added Quillin.

For such a rural community to have a level four trauma center, it is a big advantage.

"This is a huge advantage for us here, we take care of everything that we can. Occasionally, there is something that is beyond our needs, our service and we do have to transfer people to Amarillo but we have an ems service here and we have air flight," added Quillin.
