Amarillo college assists veteran students

Going back to school can be tough for anyone and that challenge can be even greater for veterans. With 800,000 veterans in college, 88% drop out their first year and only 3% make it to graduation according to a report from the Colorado Workforce Development Council.

Veterans face issues such as post traumatic stress disorder, academic difficulties, and just fitting in socially. It is also reported many veterans find it difficult to relate to younger classmates.

Amarillo college, along with other universities have programs to help these students transition back to civilian lifestyle. The veterans of Amarillo college group provides resources to its members that include counseling and tutoring.

"So we try to do what we can to get them into classes, get them into college life, and be a fun college student," Kelly Murphy, Veterans Representative says. Murphy also says the hardest thing is keeping the veterans she see's attending classes where they don't relate to other students. Veteran students are encouraged to utilize services for any needs they may have.
