Named for Palo Duro Canyon State Park
In 1876 Charles Goodnight founded the JA Ranch, which grew to over one million acres and held over 100,000 heads of cattle.
The town was officially founded Christmas Day 1887, when cattle rancher Lincoln Guy Conner settled on the site.
In 2002, Canyon was chosen as a Texas Main Street City.
The largest history museum in Texas, Panhandle Plains Museum, is located in Canyon.
