NM teen injured in apparent pipe bomb explosion

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Las Cruces police say a local teenager lost parts of 2 fingers and sustained other injuries while trying to detonate a pipe bomb.

Authorities say the 14-year-old boy was somewhat uncooperative during questioning Thursday. He was treated at the hospital for injuries to his hand and body that were not life threatening.

Police tell the Las Cruces Sun-News the boy and some friends were in an area off A Mountain when they attempted to blow up what appeared to be a pipe bomb.

Police contacted agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, who are expected to take over the investigation.

No charges have been filed.
