Drowning victim recovered from Lake Meredith

Fritch, TX - The body of a Fritch man was recovered Thursday from Lake Meredith.

Twenty-one year old Charles Johnston was camping with his family and friends when he attempted to swim across the Sanford-Yake Cove at Lake Meredith around 8:00 Wednesday night according to National Park Services.

Johnston reportedly stopped, called for help, and then went under. Search boats were in the area within minutes of the 911 calls.

Park rangers say Wednesday night's search was called off at midnight due to visibility conditions.

Searchers were back on the scene at 7:00 Thursday morning and dive teams arrived at 11:00.

Johnston's body was not found until just before 1:00 Thursday.
