Amarillo home invasion leaves one suspect dead

AMARILLO- Amarillo Police are trying to piece together the turn of events starting with an afternoon home invasion and ending with a homicide.

Around noon Friday, officers were dispatched to 2918 S. Highland on reports of a home invasion robbery.

According to a  9-1-1 caller, there were two masked men inside a backyard office trying to steal a safe.

The man confronted two subjects and told police one of them brandished what he thought was a gun.

The man says he then drew his pistol and fired in self defense.

The two suspects fled the scene in a blue Chevy Avalanche driven by a third suspect.

Minutes later, a call came in from 2403 Rule St. regarding a person who had been shot.

Gabriel Castillo, 26, was found dead in the driveway when police arrived.

Out of the 12 years Eva Witherspoon has lived in an East Amarillo neighborhood just off Amarillo Blvd., she's never witnessed a crime scene like this.

"I looked across the street to my neighbors house and there was this young man laying on the ground," she said.

Neighbor Commilla Chambers and her friend were on the couch at her home across the street when she heard police sirens.

"We ran out and was going across the street to look and one of the police officers told us to get away," she said.

The scene drew several onlookers.

Rule St. off Philadelphia was blocked off for about 3 hours while police conducted their investigation.

It's believed the suspect either lived in the home on Rule St. or knew somebody staying there.

Police are still investigating this case and anyone with information is asked to call the Amarillo Police Department special crimes unit at 378-9468.
