Texas candidates for US Senate work to set debates

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The two candidates in a run-off for the U.S. Senate are finalizing their debate plans, and 1 of them could be in Spanish.

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst's campaign says their candidate has agreed to two televised debates, one on Belo Corp. television stations and another on public television. They are still working to set dates. Dewhurst's opponent, Ted Cruz has suggested holding five debates before the runoff on July 31.

The Univision television network suggested holding one debate in Spanish. Hispanics are the fastest growing population in Texas.

Dewhurst agreed. He perfected Spanish while serving as a CIA officer in Bolivia in the 1970s.

Cruz is the son of a Cuban immigrant, but expressed doubts. He grew up speaking a mish-mish of Spanish and English and is not fluent.
