Family Support Services offers classes on how to deal with life after domestic violence

Amarillo, TX - Area children traumatized after witnessing or being the victim of domestic violence will now have the chance to receive free counseling.

The "parents as teachers and healers program" is focused on teaching children in our area how to overcome witnessing or experiencing domestic violence.

Family Support Services says this is the first time they are offering classes that simultaneously teach parents and children how to deal with life after domestic violence .

"The goal is to train the parents to be the teacher and healer for their children, to understand why children are affected and how they are affected with domestic violence and then give them some parenting strategies and some coping strategies to help their children," says Molly Rafferty, Family Support Services Clinical Director.

The eight week program begins Tuesday from 4-5pm at Family Support Services in downtown Amarillo. The classes are free to the non-abusing parent and any of their children ages 5-13. To enroll call Molly Rafferty at 342-2511. For Spanish call Irma Chavez at 342-2522.
