Feeding families

Posted: Updated:

Washington Street Family Service Center gave out food to about 300 people from the area on Thursday. That's double in comparison to last month.

Its director Mindy Briggs says, "These families literally have nothing on their shelves. Nothing in their refrigerators. And it's hard to believe, but people in Amarillo are really going hungry. No food, no nutrition, no nothing. And you cannot survive that way for very long."

Briggs says they are seeing everyone from struggling college students to elderly who can't make it with their social security check alone. But Washington Street isn't the only center in town seeing the influx of people in need of food.

Cornerstone Outreach Center Director Joe Kirkwood says, "We just see more and more families coming. On a Friday, when the families come for food assistance, we're packed to the walls. We've been doing this since 1996. And the demand today is much greater than I've ever seen it before."

Kirkwood says many are working people. It's just that their jobs aren't paying them enough to feed their families. And then there are cases like Nakia Farner who needs help because she is ill. And the money in her household goes to paying costly medical bills.

Farner says, "It's helped out a lot. A friend of mine told me about the Corner Stone Outreach Center, and before then it's like going days without being able to have any food in the house. To go, you know, to scrape up every little penny that you can just to go get some hot dogs or some bread. Something to be able to eat everyday."

Cornerstone also helps people find jobs, a way to sustain themselves in the future. Counselor Vonna Ossenbeck says, "I had a lady come in this morning. And she said, well two years ago you helped me. And she told me the job. And she said I've done good ever since."

Cornerstone Outreach Center will be giving out food Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. They are located at 1111 N. Buchanan in Amarillo.
