Woman dies after rollover on I-40

Amarillo, TX - An autopsy has been ordered for an area woman involved in a major car accident on I-40 Saturday evening.

The Amarillo Police Department tells us when they arrived on scene, they found a Chevy Suburban which had reportedly been struck and rolled down the over pass embankment at westbound I-40 and Bowie.

The driver of the Suburban, 78 year-old Mearlene Hooker, was transported to a local hospital
where she later died.

The victim had been driving westbound I-40 when she was hit by another vehicle.

The suspect, 18 year-old Edwin Ortiz, fled the scene, but officers were able to locate him.  Witnesses told officers they had reportedly seen the suspect racing another vehicle before the crash.

Ortiz was arrested and booked into the Potter County Jail for failure to stop and render aid along with racing/causes death.  This incident remains under investigation.
