Amarillo, TX- Changes to downtown Amarillo are starting as the old police station is demolished.
The demolition of the old police building is about thirty percent done, and once it is finished there will be room to start building a new hotel and parking garage.
There is no set timeline for when the 113-million dollar project will be finished.
It includes a full service hotel, multi-purpose event venue and parking garage.
Melissa Dailey says the demolition is just the beginning of Amarillo's landscape changes.
"That's really the first, kind of physical sign we are moving forward on this project for the convention hotel and the garage. This will be the location of the garage, with retail on the ground level and that will be the first phase of this next project," said Dailey with Downtown Amarillo.
For the demolitions we are told a local contractor was used, and the city plans to try to use more local companies as plans progress.
Contracts are also in the works to actually begin progress on the hotel, and move the Coca-Cola building out of downtown.
