Amarillo police ensure registered sex offenders follow the law

Amarillo, TX - Nine of the 513 registered sex offenders in the Amarillo area are now in police custody after a compliance check by local law enforcement.

Four offenders were arrested for charges ranging from probation violation to possession of child pornography when officers were out making sure all local convicted sex offenders are living where they are registered.

Five others were arrested after warrants were issued for violating the sex offenders registration law.

Several agencies took part in the compliance check to make sure all records are up to date and it is known where each of the 513 is currently living.

"Certainly for the ones who consider high risk we want to know where those persons are at. They may offend again. They may never offend again. None the less, we know what their history has been and we feel a lot more comfortable having that information to work with and the public has the right to know that information too."said Lt. Martin Birkenfeld.

Police say there are offenders still being investigated at this time, so more warrants may be issued for registration violations.

If you know of a convicted sex offender who has a warrant call the Amarillo Police Department at 378-3038.
