Clovis, New Mexico - If you live in eastern New Mexico, you may notice a large amount of smoke in the area over the next few weeks. That's because prescribed burns are scheduled in the area over the next 30 to 45 days.
Officials with Cannon Air Force Base say the 27th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron will be performing a series of prescribed controlled burns at the Melrose Air Force Range.
The purpose of the prescribed burns is to reduce the risk of wildfires during the windy spring months.
