Potter County one of the least healthy in Texas

Amarillo, TX - Potter County is ranked one of the least healthy counties in Texas.

Mortality rates, access to health care, environment, and health behaviors were all factored in when 221 Texas counties were ranked.

High numbers of sexually transmitted infections, uninsured residents and adult obesity landed Potter County at number one hundred and ninety nine.

While the county is listed as one of the least health, Randall County is one of the healthiest.

Officials say the differences may be because of economic, culture and educational differences, Matt Richardson, the public health director for both counties says the reason is hard to determine.

"Pinpointing a reason, a single reason why, is really difficult because, smoking rates affect premature death, the premature death affects that ranking. Obesity rates affect it, the low birth rate babies affect how that ranks. Uninsured status makes a big difference," said Richardson.

Richardson and several Potter County commissioners we spoke with say, the best way to make sure Potter County becomes healthier is to start educational programs to slow down obesity, smoking and other health problems.
