AMARILLO, TX --Several day cares here in Amarillo are not meeting state standards putting your child at risk.
Amarillo is home to dozens of ca of day cares and with so many options to choose from, how can you tell the good from the bad?
"Day care centers should be meeting minimum standards set and regulations," Sharon Anthony, a licensed child care inspector said.
However, we discovered not all of them were meeting those requirements.
14 day cares in Amarillo alone have not only racked up violations---they've had their permits revoked.
"It's very rare that we walk into a facility and ask them to stop operating," Anthony said.
That's exactly what happened to several home day cares according to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services web site.
"If they revoke the permit, they have to wait 5 years before they can re-apply," Anthony explained.
Mother Alma Esparza says she's never put her children in day care because she fears leaving her kids with complete strangers.
"I wonder if they are going to hit them or how they are going to handle them when they are crying," Esparza recently told NewsChannel 10.
Anthony has a few tips to help parents stay informed about their child's day care when they leave.
"We encourage parents to go to the day care center, walk in and use all 5 senses when looking around," she said.
We're also told the best way to spot if your day care is a deal or a dud is to make periodic, unexpected visits.
