UPDATE: Deadly car explosion in Hereford

Hereford, TX - A vehicle explosion leaves a Hereford man dead and debris scattered throughout the area.

The large explosion was reported at 6:40 this morning on the 100 block of North Avenue K. 56-year-old Tommy Barrett was discovered by family members lying next to his car. They carried him away from the flames.

Attempts were made by emergency personnel to resuscitate him but Barrett died as a result of his injuries sustained in the explosion. He was a long time employee of Hereford ISD and worked in the maintenance department.

The Fire Marshall from Hereford tells us they are calling the vehicle explosion an accidental incident. The Fire Department, Amarillo Bomb Squad and ATF from Lubbock were at the scene since this morning investigating and say no explosive devices were found.
They have ruled out foul play. They believe this incident was a fuel error explosion. Some acetylene tanks were recovered from inside the cab. It is believed that one of the tanks was leaking.

An autopsy has been ordered and will be performed in Lubbock.
