Flu and other bugs spreading in the area

Amarillo, TX - Viruses are making their way around the area now that flu season is at it's peak.

The peak of flu season has just begun, but some local doctors say they are also seeing many other bugs.

Just in the last few weeks, patients have been seen with strep, croup and pink eye.

Amarillo Urgent Care says so far about one in five patients coming in with flu-like symptoms have tested positive for the illness.

Doctor Todd Bell with the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center says the flu is common this time of year, but this is a late start for some of the other bugs.

"One of the things that is a little bit odd is this year is that we are seeing, for example, some of those other viruses like RSV, usually start earlier and we didn't see them earlier in the year but we are starting to see a lot of that in the past couple of weeks. So we have our typical flu season plus some of these other viruses that are usually a little more spread out," said Bell.

If you think you have the flu, doctors say to drink a lot of fluids, take over the counter medication and get rest.
