Driver in accident that killed 3 arrested

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - A 26-year-old man is charged with intoxication manslaughter and aggravated assault, accused of causing the deaths of 3 men in a crash along a road next to the Texas Tech campus.

Brian Cody Hawthorne was arrested Thursday and jailed on three counts of each charge. Hawthorne, whose arm was broken in the crash, is in the Lubbock County Jail with bond set at $150,000. Jail records show Hawthorne had no attorney.

Hawthorne was charged four days after he drove south along University Avenue about 1 a.m. Sunday. His 2001 Toyota pickup jumped a curb and rolled over before striking and killing a 68-year-old man coming home on a bicycle from work.

Also killed in the accident were two passengers in Hawthorne's pickup, 23-year-old Hernandez Almaguer and 27-year-old Kendrick Lamaar Johnson.
