Cattle herds at near-record lows

Amarillo, Texas - Rancher in Texas and Oklahoma made the most drastic cuts to their cattle herds this year.

The National Agricultural Statistics Service says it's been fifty years since the nation has experienced such a small cattle herd size.

Texas continues to lead the nation with over eleven million head of cattle and calves but its numbers fell by eleven percent.

The devastating drought is behind the decrease.

It left shriveled pastures and drove hay prices to record levels.
