Dallas, company at odds after pig's blood spill

Posted: Updated:

DALLAS (AP) - A Dallas meat packing company says a clogged sewage line spilled pig's blood into a creek behind its slaughterhouse and polluted the Trinity River with animal flesh, hair and other body parts.

The Columbia Packing Co. said in a statement Thursday the pollution was an accident and claimed the city knew about the sewage problem for 41 days before contacting the company.

The Dallas Morning News reports that investigators raided the Columbia facility Jan. 19 after seeing aerial photos that showed streaks of red fluid in Cedar Creek, which flows into the Trinity.

A city report cited Columbia for 18 code violations, included discharging "hair and fleshings, whole blood, plastic gloves and other materials" into the wastewater system.

The company said it responded quickly and defended its safety record.
