Making college more affordable

AMARILLO, Texas -  President Obama is sending a message to some colleges, saying higher education cannot be a luxury but, instead, is something that is imperative to our economy.

In last night's State of the Union address, President Obama talked about the "daunting challenge" the cost of college can be.

The President says there is more debt in student loans than there is with credit card debt

He's calling on colleges to freeze tuition increases and is praising community colleges for trying to keep higher education more affordable.

Amarillo College representative Ellen Green says, in Texas, community colleges do a lot when it comes to providing an affordable education.

"Community colleges across Texas and really the nation are doing the heavy lifting when it comes to educating people beyond high school," Green said.

The president is also calling on Congress to not raise the interest rate on subsidized loans. Right now, they are at 3-point-4 percent, but Congress is considering doubling that.
