I-27 accident leaves all lanes shut down for hours

AMARILLO, TX - An afternoon accident on I-27 and Western left all southbound lanes shut down during rush hour traffic.

Shortly before 4 p.m., Amarillo Police, Fire and AMS were dispatched to the scene on reports of a major accident.

Officials say a white GMC Acadia was leaving the parking lot of Western Bowl, 5120 Canyon Drive, when the driver darted across the feeder road and onto the highway striking an older model Dodge Charger headed south towards Canyon.

The 71-year-old male driver of the Charger was transported to a hospital and is in critical condition at last check.

We're told a 46-year-old female driver of the Acadia was also taken to the hospital and remains in stable condition tonight.

From 4 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., all lanes on I-27 southbound are closed from Republic Avenue to Western.

Drivers were forced to take the feeder road and get back on at Hillside.

As of 7:15 p.m., all lanes have be reopened.
