Questionable grades given to school districts

Portales, N.M.----Curry and Roosevelt County school districts may not have done as well as they could have with trial test results for the New Mexico Department of Education's new A-F grading system.

In Clovis, 16 of 18 schools were graded with two schools receiving exemplary ratings.

Those schools include Ranchvale Elementary and Mesa Elementary.

Parkview Elementary scored an F.

Superintendent Terry Myers says the grades will be used as a starting point to make improvements.

In Portales, no schools were given exemplary ratings and averaged a C grade.

Portales Superintendent Randy Fowler is taking the scores into consideration, but notes they had no guidelines to the new grading system before testing.

Both superintendents agree the grading procedures for scoring their scores are foggy.

Portales and Clovis schools hope to be re-evaluated after students take spring exams and should have a clearer understanding of grading scores by summer.
