Cracking down on prostitution problem

AMARILLO, Texas - Amarillo police recently carried out a prostitution sting because of an increase of complaints relating to the problem. The community hopes getting out the word will help stop it.

One problem area is Boulevard East, where local business owners say it is not uncommon to see prostitutes walking along the street and men soliciting to them. Corporal Jerry Neufeld with the Amarillo Police Department says it is an issue of supply and demand and both parties are guilty.

"You want to arrest the prostitutes themselves, but you also want to arrest the ones that are out there soliciting the prostitution," Neufeld said. "They need to be arrested as well, and they need to be charged just like the females that are out there."

Prostitution is a Class B misdemeanor in Amarillo. If caught, both prostitutes and solicitors could face a two-thousand dollar fine and six months of jail time.
