Officials reopen Interstate 40

AMARILLO, Texas (AP) - Officials have reopened the main east-west road through the Panhandle.

The Texas Department of Transportation said that Interstate 40, which had been closed west of Amarillo after up to 10 inches of snow covered parts of the region, was reopened Tuesday from the city to the New Mexico line.

Segments of other highways remained shut down, and authorities continued to discourage travel as they worked to clear roadways of ice and snow.

Amarillo was not as hard hit as other parts of the Panhandle. National Weather Service forecaster Todd Beal told The Associated Press that 10 inches of snow had fallen since Monday outside Texline, near the border with New Mexico.

However, Beal said the storm was moving east Tuesday and the worst was over.
