NM gets grant for school-based health centers

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The New Mexico Department of Health has received a federal grant that will help 10 school-based health centers around the state.

The centers will be able to use the money for early screening and diagnostic testing as well as student health questionnaires.

The $112,000 grant comes from the Health Resources and Services Administration. It's part of $14 million in competitive federal grants from the agency.

The state Health Department supports a total of 56 school health centers throughout the state that provide combinations of primary care services, mental health care, substance abuse counseling, case management, dental health, nutrition education and health education.

Officials say schools that offer a health center see improvements in attendance and academic performance.
