New gift card trends

Amarillo, TX - The days of using plastic may be numbered.

With the push of a button you can now instantly send someone a gift card.

Nearly half of shoppers in Amarillo will buy a gift card this holiday season.

Gift cards have been the number one present for the past four years.

Now you have the option of sending it through your phone or email.

"Whether it's Target or the grocery store, just to be able to pull it out rather than carrying cash or anything else cause it is very secure...it's kind of where the future's going," says Barry McDonald, store manager at Target.

Where traditional gift cards are a thing of the past.

"First you're going to have to download the app onto your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone. Once that app is on there you can go on and purchase basically a gift card and what it will do is it will put a scannable barcode onto your phone," says Barry McDonald, store manager at Target.

If you need to give it to someone you can just send them a text and instantly they can start putting it to use.

"It's very simple, when you're ready to buy something all you have to do is pay with a flash of your phone."

Other places like Chili's restaurant is now offering E-gift cards, sent via email.

"You can personalize it, you can upload your own photos, you can just choose one of our pre-made templates and you can also put a personalized memo," says Jacob Ramsay, manager, Chili's South Coulter.

But the Better Business Bureau says you need to be cautious when using these new methods.

"It's very important to protect that device and maybe put some things into place that you might not have into place, like an access code to turn on the phone."

It's recommended that you review the terms and conditions, make sure the gift card account is protected with a security code, before use consider downloading anti-virus software, and check to see that the business is reliable.
