Driving in the snow? New app keeps you safer

Amarillo, Texas - There's a brand new app designed to keep you safer in this cold, snowy, dangerous weather.

If you're stuck on the side of the road, you're of course going to want the heat on, which of course means that engine has to be running.

One of the most beneficial things the app can do is tell you how long you can keep your car on before you run out of gas. That, though is just the beginning.

Angela Burkham with Texas AgriLIFE Extension says, "It alerts you every 30 minutes to get out of your car and to make sure your tailpipe is not blocked by the snow if you are stuck on the side of the road. That is a cause of carbon monoxide poisoning when that tailpipe is blocked by the snow."

The Winter Survival Kit app is completely free.

It works on iPhones and Androids. For those of you with a Blackberry, unfortunately, it's not available for you yet.

It was developed with grant money from the USDA. Here's a link to the app: http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/extension/apps/winter-survival-kit
